Jamit Job Board

Dear Jammers,

I announce that as of today, Jamit Software Ltd. will suspend the issuing of new commercial licenses for the Jamit Job Board indefinitely. The Jamit Job Board (v3.6) will reach the End Of Life (EOL) after 6 months from the date of this notice. The existing source code will now be licensed under an open source license, free for anyone to download.

This is the beginning of a new phase for the Jamit Job Board, and I hope to continue on the development of version 4, which will be available under an open source license.

Jamit job board was first released on the 5th of May, 2005. I'm very proud to be an author of software which is in use to power thousands of web sites, and I'm glad that I have had the opportunity to do what I do for so long! As with all software products, there is a time when things must either evolve or come to an end.

What are the reasons for this decision?

1. Web development has significantly progressed since 2005, which means that source code is fast becoming out-dated and is in need of a re-write and re-design. For example, one feature that's really missing is the integration with social networks. Technologies such as Ajax, CSS 3 and HTML 5 are taking a strong hold too. Meanwhile, there have been many great new features added to PHP that should be taken advantage of.

2. There has been rampant piracy of the Jamit Job Board. A search on Google for 'jamit nulled' displays hundreds of thousands results. It's impossible to request the removal of them all! While some may see piracy as a positive thing, it has certainly hit the bottom line as it's directly competing with the current licensing model.

3. There is a paradigm shift in the way software is delivered, shifting away from self-hosted to 'Software as a Service' model, (or so called 'cloud computing'). SaaS is becoming the more preferred delivery as it's easier to deploy and simplifies maintenance. I see a new road for the Jamit Job Board in the future. I hope that going down the open source road will result in more contributions from the community of users, coders, and designers. Having more than one core developer will make it easier to keep up with the latest developments in technology and ensure that the project is always up-to-date. The open source version will eliminate the need for the pirated versions. Having the software free may ensure that at least someone will offer it as SaaS.

As with all open source projects, funding is always a problem. In order to have initial funds coming in for the project, there will be an official community membership with benefits. (If you have already purchased a Jamit Job Board license, consider yourself a member). Jamit Software will be the company behind the Jamit Job Board project, later when the project takes off, I may look at ways how the project can be separated from the company into an independent organization. For now, I will put developing v4 in to a high priority.

So cheers to everyone! The project will now be in your hands, the community! I look forward to collaborating with you. I welcome anyone who’s interested to volunteer and join in the development of Jamit V4.

Best Regards,

Adam Malinwski Author of Jamit Job Board
